Lead the Way Staff Dive into a Financial Literacy Workshop with BMI Federal Credit Union

On Friday, February 20, 2026, Lead the Way staff participated in the BMI Federal Credit Union Financial Literacy Workshop, an in‑depth professional learning experience designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of budgeting and real‑life money management. Staff members immersed themselves in interactive workshops hosted at BMI Federal Credit Union’s headquarters.

Throughout the workshop, LTW staff engaged in hands‑on activities covering essential financial topics such as savings, household expenses, transportation costs, childcare, credit card usage, utilities, and other personal or family‑related expenses.  Each staff member was assigned a specific career scenario and guided through the process of calculating monthly living expenses based on that salary. They then examined how to balance mandatory responsibilities with discretionary or “fun” expenses while maintaining a realistic financial plan.

The workshop also incorporated life‑like simulations that required participants to budget within the parameters of a two‑parent household with one or two children. This exercise offered LTW staff a deeper understanding of the financial pressures and decision‑making challenges that individuals and families face daily.

By experiencing the full program firsthand, Lead the Way staff are now better prepared to guide youth through these same financial literacy concepts, ensuring future programming is both informed and relatable. The excursion provided valuable insight into distinguishing needs from wants, planning realistic budgets, and understanding how career choices influence long‑term financial stability.

Lead The Way extends sincere appreciation to the BMI Federal Credit Union team for offering this impactful learning opportunity and supporting LTW’s mission to equip young people with the tools needed for future success.
